Advancing Leadership Formation Under Sustained Responsibility
Our Story
The Institute for Leadership Formation and Responsibility emerged from a central observation: leadership is often evaluated by position and performance, but rarely examined as a process of formation under responsibility.
Developed through the scholarship of Ella R. Thompson, Ph.D., the Institute was established to create a space for the study of leadership formation with greater precision—bridging leadership studies, theology, and applied research.
What began as a framework has become an invitation to build a field.

Our Mission
To advance interdisciplinary research on how leadership authority is formed, sustained, and constrained through responsibility.
Operating Presence
The Institute operates with a bi-coastal presence across the Washington, DC, and Los Angeles regions, with additional engagement in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, and works with institutions and leaders in national and international contexts.

Global Engagement
The Institute’s work is informed by international scholarly engagement, including research and lecturing across Europe. With academic roots at King’s College London, London, England, ILFR engages in leadership formation within a broader global context.
